Candidate for Partnership: Kushuhum Municipality
The Kushuhum Municipality, also known as the 'Kushuhum Settlement Territorial Community' in direct translation, is the home to over 18,000 residents that encompasses three Ukrainian towns—Balabyne, Malokaterynivka, and Kushuhum. Situated on the southern bank of the magnificent Dnipro River, the municipality is located to the south of Zaporizhzhia City. The European highway system connects its residents and businesses to other regions in Ukraine and Europe.
According to the Kushuhum Municipality’s Mayor Volodymyr Sosunovskyi and his colleagues, they hope a partnership with an American city would create joint short-term and long-term projects in such areas as education, healthcare, and sports.
In the past decade, the Kushuhum Municipality has successfully implemented an effective management reform of its medical services. It has attracted private investors to enhance the quality of healthcare services and they now include primary, secondary as well as inpatient healthcare.
The Municipality’s three grade schools cover elementary, middle, and high school education; over the last few years several American Peace Corps volunteers have shared their expertise with students and their teachers.
The community's primary industries include lime and sunflower processing, vinegar production, as well as the fabrication of marble and granite slabs.
All three of the Municipality's towns—Balabyne, Kushuhum, and Malokaterynivka—have their origins in the eighteenth century, founded by the brave and freedom-loving Zaporizhzhia Kozaks. The presence of archeological sites serves as a testament to the rich history of these settlements, dating back to the Bronze Age, the era of the Scythians, and the nomadic tribes of the X-XI centuries.
